Understanding Transitions in Early Years Education

Effective transitions play a crucial role in supporting children as they move from one setting to another. They help ensure consistent communication and provide essential support for families, fostering a smoother adjustment for the child. These periods of change are critical in early childhood and can have a significant impact on a child’s emotional well-being and overall development.

What Are Transitions?

Transitions refer to key moments of change in a child’s early life, such as:

* Moving between different care environments (e.g., from home to nursery, or between nursery settings)

* Progressing from one room to another within the same setting (e.g., from the baby room to the toddler room)

* Starting school or transitioning from preschool to primary school

Transitions may be planned—like starting school—or unplanned, such as those caused by changes in a family’s circumstances. Regardless of the nature of the transition, careful planning and consistent support are essential to help children navigate these changes confidently and positively.

By implementing effective, early years practitioners can facilitate smoother transitions for children, ensuring they feel safe, supported, and ready to embrace new experiences.
