How I became an Assistant Psychologist- Beth

The processĀ

I loved Psychology so much that I studied it at both undergraduate and masters level. As I approached the end of my time at university, I started to panic about what was next! I didn’t know much about what jobs could put me on the journey into my Psychology career. I returned to hospitality for a while, struggling to find roles that would suit my interests. I then came across an advert for a mental health support worker on a psychiatric unit – a job I did for about a year, and the leg up I needed into my current role as an Assistant Psychologist! I’ve now been able to gain a variety of experience in working with people with mental health difficulties, and my passion for understanding people continues.

Beth’s advice for current studentsĀ

If I could go back in time, I would tell my younger self to explore more opportunities, paid or voluntary, relating to mental health. I think this would have complimented my studies nicely, and put me in an even better position to start my Psychology career! Equally, its okay to not be where you might want to be straight away – don’t underestimate the journey!
