Skills & Capacity

A focus on workforce skills and capacity is needed to build the strong relationships that are conducive to sustained engagement with families. If the process of family engagement is largely determined by the qualities and skills of the practitioner, this must be the primary focus at the start of any intervention or offer for families.

Many years ago, Robert Holman spent time researching the techniques, skills and aptitudes needed for family centre and community work. Practitioners who were able to bring the resources of their own personal strengths and sensitivities to the relationship with families, as well as the resources they offered through multi-agency connections, had the most successful outcomes. He described these practitioners as ‘resourceful friends’.

Stop and Reflect: Has this course highlighted any areas where you want to develop your skills? Continuing Professional Development is essential when working with families. Remember that CPD is not just about doing training courses or qualifications. It could be a website, talking to a colleague about how they handled a challenging situation or reading a book! The key is to reflect on your learning and think about how it will impact your job or role in the future.

What personal and professional development could you take part in to support your interactions with children and their families? Re-visit the GM REFLECT competencies to identify key areas where you might benefit from further support and training.

Congratulations on completing the course! Well done for investing the time to learn more about family engagement and reflect on your own approach.
