Introduce
Challenging conversations with parents are not uncommon for practitioners working in early years settings and services. However, it can be a daunting and challenging task. There are many different issues that might arise and practitioners need to have the skills and confidence to address these.
Develop
This leaflet has been developed by clinicians at the Anna Freud Centre and aims to help you build trusting relationships with parents and carers so that you are aware of what steps you could take to be prepared and equipped.
In the next video Kate Berry, Early Help Services Manager for Salford City Council, explores how we can best approach challenging conversations with families.
Reflect
Stop and Reflect: take some time to think about how you approach challenge conversations with parents and answer the following:
– How might you ensure that families feel listened to and valued during any conversations?
– What strategies might be helpful to de-escalate tension of defensiveness?
– What skills or strategies could you develop further to handle challenging conversations more effectively in the future?
