Resilience: What is it Really?

Workbook instruction: Please refer to pages 32 to 34 of the workbook for this sprint.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain the Resilience Portfolio Model (RPM) and its four domains as a framework for understanding and developing resilience.
  1. Reflect on and apply personal strengths across the RPM domains to support wellbeing and coping in real-world situations.

When we talk about resilience, what do you think of? Grit? Bouncing back? Toughing it out? Well, resilience is a bit more nuanced than that. In this sprint, we’re going to explore a more layered way of thinking about resilience; less as a trait, and more as a toolkit we build over time.

We’ll introduce you to the Resilience Portfolio Model (RPM), which gives us a practical way to understand the different strengths that help us cope with stress and trauma, and that help us to feel more resilient in the face of adversity.

Stop and Reflect

Think about the last time you faced something really tough. It could have been a major life event, or just one of those emotionally exhausting stretches where everything felt harder than usual.

Now ask yourself: What got me through it?

  • Was it someone you leaned on?
  • Was it something you did?
  • Did your environment play a role?
  • What “tools” did you reach for?

So, take a moment to reflect: What helped you last time? What might help you next time?
