Make your pledge

Takeaways from the study pack

It is wonderful that you have taken the time to reach this point in the study pack. We hope that it has been a fruitful self-discover and learning journey for you. Here is a recap of the ten steps in your journey:

Pledge Cycle

It is important to hold yourself accountable to using the learning you have taken from this Becoming Culturally Competent self-study pack. To support you with this, we encourage you to use the pledge cycle (graphic below).

Pledge Cycle, Dr Eileen Pollard, (2024),
UTA, Manchester Metropolitan University

Pledge – What is one thing you are going to do differently in relation to cultural competency as a result of your learning?

Action – Put into practice the action you have outlined in your pledge. It might be something simple like reading a new resource or committing to being more conscious around discussing the impact of using different cultural lens when decision making, or it could be something more complex like immersing yourself in another culture or taking time to have a conversation with someone else from a different culture to yours to better understand things from their cultural perspective.

Review – How did it go? Was your pledged action successful in growing your cultural competence?

Reflect – Take time to think about why it was or wasn’t successful and what your learnings are from the process of pledging an action. At this point, you can decide whether to continue with the same action to give it some more practice and repeat the cycle again, or if you are confident you have mastered your current pledge, move on to a new one and revisit the cycle again.

Making a pledge is an important commitment. Most importantly to yourself – that you are wanting to be a part of positive change. Sometimes, sharing that with someone else helps to create a level of accountability. This could be a peer, colleague or family member. You could ask them to check in with you on this.

We also encourage you to share your pledge on this Padlet page, anonymously, you can see some examples of pledges there already.

We would really appreciate your honest feedback now that you have completed this resource. If you’d like us to hear your thoughts and feedback, please fill out this feedback form. https://forms.office.com/e/Z7gQBEnary

The final sprint in this topic is a resources page for further information. At the bottom of the resources section, click ‘Mark Complete’ to finish this training and receive your Rise points.
