Puncturing an Artery
- This should not occur if the vessel is palpated, as arterial pulsation will be felt.
- If an artery is punctured, bright red blood will pump out under force.
- If this occurs release the tourniquet, remove needle, and apply pressure for 5 minutes to ensure haemostasis.

Puncturing a Nerve
- It is rare that a nerve is punctured but if you do the patient will complain in severe pain and may have parathesis (pins and needles).
- Tourniquet should be released, and the needle removed immediately.
- Patients often feel faint and need to lie down. Therefore, explain to the patient what has happened and reassure him/her. If the symptoms do not settle you should call onsite first aider and security.
- Ensure patient feels well enough to leave and advise them to return to hospital/GP if symptoms get worse.
