Take the first step to learning a range of the languages spoken across Greater Manchester, including Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Polish and Mandarin Chinese. Explore how language learning can enhance your employability, and the ways in which you can take that learning further.

This intensive will start by presenting the case for learning a language, before giving you a brief introduction to Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Polish and Mandarin Chinese. This intensive caters for people with no (or very limited) prior knowledge of the five languages and who would like to learn and practice some beginner-level words and phrases. At the end, you will also have learnt about the various opportunities that are available to you for learning a language at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Tim Leigh is a Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Language Centre. His main interest is within English Language Teaching (ELT) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Prior to joining Man Met, he spent more than ten years working overseas: teaching and managing language courses in the Far East, the Middle East, and Europe.   

Jeronee Jennycloss is the Graduate E-Learning Coordinator for the Rise Project. As part of her internship, she oversees the creation and delivery of the intensives that are present on the Rise website and is jointly responsible for the creation of the Community Languages intensive. She is passionate about helping students become lifelong learners.

Halima Benzdira is a final year Ph.D. student at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her background is in linguistics and more precisely in Intercultural Communication and Politeness studies. Halima is delivering Arabic as part of the Community Languages intensive. She is passionate about learning languages (e.g. Italian), teaching Arabic (a former Arabic Language facilitator at MMU), and acrylic painting. 

Nameera Khan is a second year Accounting and Finance student at Manchester Metropolitan University. Nameera is delivering Urdu as part of the Community Languages intensive. Not only Urdu is her first language, but she also learnt it at high school level in Pakistan.  

Fatima Youssef has almost completed a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Management at Manchester Metropolitan University. Fatima is delivering Hindi as part of the Community Languages intensive. Her interest in the Hindi language stems from her close relationships with people of an Indian heritage, as well as living in India for some time. 

Magdalena Marchowska-Raza is a third year PhD student at the Faculty of Business and Law, Department of Marketing, Retail and Tourism. She will be delivering Polish as part of the community languages intensive. In the future, she would like to learn Urdu, as this is language of her significant other.  

Zoe Vong is a second year student of Architecture at Manchester Metropolitan University. In her free time, she enjoys playing team sports, such as volleyball. She will be delivering the content for Mandarin as part of the community languages intensive.
