Volunteering: An opportunity to learn through service
to 31st December
English Conversation Volunteer (Central Manchester)
Do you want to help refugees improve their English? This is your opportunity to do so in an informal setting such as a conversation cafe, gardening club or cooking group. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to chat with refugees studying with Caritas Aspire.
The opportunity to speak conversational English with native speakers is absolutely essential for refugees seeking to integrate into their new communities. However, due to the social isolation refugees often find themselves in, it can be difficult to find the opportunity to do so. By volunteering with us you will be offering valuable support to refugees.
This role will be flexible, with volunteers able to book into sessions at times convenient for them. All sessions will be face-to-face at locations in Central Manchester.
Why we want you
Caritas Aspire Education offers English classes, mentoring and well-being services to refugees in Greater Manchester. Integral to our service is the offering of a welcoming and aspirational community in which refugees can make connections, improve their language, and rebuild their lives. We are therefore looking for native or native-level English speakers to participate in informal conversation groups with our refugee learners.
What you will be doing
Chatting informally with refugees and other migrants in a variety of settings. This could include in a classroom, as part of a gardening or cooking club, or over tea and coffee in a conversation group
Building rapport in a friendly and approachable manner
Respecting volunteering boundaries, safeguarding policy and health and safety
The skills you need
Native or native-level spoken English (if non-native please provide evidence of IELTs Speaking 7.5 or equivalent qualification – if you do not have this but would still like to volunteer please contact us directly as we have other opportunities)
What's in it for you
The opportunity to build rapport and interact with people from a wide range of linguistic, cultural and religious backgrounds
The chance to learn more about refugees and issues related to refugee integration and wellbeing
Full Induction and Training Opportunities to volunteer in other roles within the organisation
