College Governor
Governors are volunteers who play a key role in planning Bridge Colleges long-term future, its aims, and values.
They hold the senior leadership of the college to account for its management; quality of the teaching and learning; achievement, wellbeing and safety of pupils; and compliance with statutory responsibilities.
We're looking for people with safeguarding or SEMH, SEN experience and an interest in special education to:
read the documents for and attend all full Governing Body meetings and subgroups of which they are members
attend induction and relevant training events organised by the College or Together Trust
get to know the College and its staff by visiting the College and attending inset and other meetings to which Governors are invited by the principal
take on specific responsibilities appropriate to their experience and expertise (in this instance we are hoping it will be in safeguarding).
Bridge College is a non-maintained special needs college based in Manchester. It is one of the specialist education services provided by the charity the Together Trust. We cater for young people aged 16 to 25 years of age who have struggled to cope in other settings because of their individual barriers to learning including learning difficulties, disabilities, complex health needs, and autism. Every day we provide personalised support, tailored learning, and hands-on life skills to give young people the confidence to exceed their aspirations.
What the role of governor involves
Governors are volunteers who play a key role in planning Bridge College’s long-term future, its aims, and values. They hold the senior leadership of the college to account for its management; quality of the teaching and learning; achievement, wellbeing and safety of pupils; and compliance with statutory responsibilities.
Appointed Governors are expected to:
read the documents for and attend all full Governing Body meetings and subgroups of which they are members
attend induction and relevant training events organised by the College or Together Trust
get to know the College and its staff by visiting the College and attending inset and other meetings to which Governors are invited by the principal
take on specific responsibilities appropriate to their experience and expertise (in this instance we are hoping it will be in safeguarding).
Benefits of the role
Our Governors tell us of their personal satisfaction and the sense of reward gained from being involved with our schools and college. It is also an excellent opportunity to add strategic leadership experience to your CV!
What you'll need
No specific qualifications are needed – just the time and expertise that will help to inform the College development and practice as above. We are however specifically seeking governors with the knowledge and expertise to take on specific responsibilities related to safeguarding. (We are also looking for an Education / SEMH governor - see the separate role listed on our website for details of that.)
Whether you are new to school governance or have experience of this type of role, we would love to hear from you if you have experience in safeguarding.
Time commitment
We would expect the role to take up approximately 15-20 hours per term (each term lasting approximately ten weeks). Further detail is available the Role Descriptor below.
We look forward to hearing from you!
