The Beautiful Game Workshop: MSoA x Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart
A workshop open to BA/MA Textiles and Graphic Design students at Manchester School of Art.
During the Beautiful Game Workshop, we invite you to make visuals that complete the sentence “Football is…..”
You could say “Football is life”
You could say “Football is corrupt”
You could say “Football is a game of two halves”
You could say “Football is pie…or joy… or boring…”
Maybe “Football is…meh!”
What you think football is, is totally up to you.
So, you don’t have to like or understand football to participate in this workshop. All responses to the prompting question are invited. And whether your response is positive or negative, it is absolutely valid. Throughout the session you will design and make visuals which represents your chosen response.
We will explore social, political, functional, formal, gender-specific, aesthetic, sportive, pop-cultural, and more, approaches and positions of this (un)popular game.
Throughout this exciting workshop you will have access to and guidance to use the heat press to make images that illustrate your ideas.
Roles:
- Sewing Machinests – to machine stitch the fabrics together to create one large banner
- Heat Press Facilitators – to heat transfer the design onto fabric
- Image Makers – to create designs using collage and hand drawn using disperse dyes to then be transferred onto fabric
We will end the day with an exhibition of all the work created across the Vertical Gallery in the LS Lowry Building – Exciting!
Your workshop staff team on the day will be:
- John Rooney, Senior Lecturer BA (Hons) Graphic Design
- Emma Cocchiarella, Senior Lecturer BA (Hons) Textiles in Practice
- Bethany Turner-Pemberton, MMU Design PhD Candidate
- Patrick Thomas, Professor Communication Design, ABK Stuttgart
